murmurs of the universe
(2026)
a soft mechanical hum sounds. but kene lets the sound pass as a result of sahba’s machinery and sets the bottle down, stretching out its back and neck until the satisfying soft pops resound. its fingers return to the keyboard, hovering over the keys, mind empty for the moment. then, in the midst of its focus regathering, the hum emits again, its volume increasing.
“sahba, what is that damn noise—” kene looks up at the phone, silencing itself as its gaze meets that of a glowing figure’s in the self-recording portion of the screen, their form bent over its shoulder.
muscles tensing, kene breaks its stare from the fiery white glare for a quick second, closing its deep violet eyes and taking in a slow, shaky breath. the smooth hums this presence emits continue, its position behind kene’s rigid figure persisting regardless of the individual’s ability to sense it. the essence lingers, then the presence, the energy, is gone.
kene can sense the departure but stays in the same position. after a couple of seconds, kene musters up the strength to hold sight of its surroundings again. opening one eye before the other, the clear environment of its bedroom lets kene release the captive breath as its back rests against the chair in exasperation, heart pumping.
“i need to take my ass to bed,” kene mutters to itself, goosebumps prominent on its wenge-hued skin.
